Improvement of the creation process of accessible games and toys for people with intellectual disabilities – INTELECTOYS & GAMES
The INTELECTOYS & GAMES project has a clear social focus, as it seeks to improve the creation of toys that adapt to the needs of all children, specifically including those with intellectual disabilities. The project benefits from the cooperation of key companies in the sector, recognized for their commitment and track record in inclusivity and accessible design. Among them are Miniland, specialized in educational toys; Juguettos, the leading toy retail chain in Spain with its own brands and inclusive strategies; World Brands, distributor of internationally renowned products; and Playmobil Ibérica, subsidiary of the well-known German toy manufacturer.
INTELECTOYS & GAMES will generate new knowledge and practical tools that will contribute to building a more competitive, inclusive, and socially responsible toy sector, establishing itself as a driving force for the industry in the Valencian Community.
The overall objective of the INTELECTOYS & GAMES project is to support SMEs in the toy sector of the Valencian Community in improving the process of creating games and toys that are accessible to people with intellectual disabilities, through the adaptation of universal design tools to the toy-making context.
Specific Objectives
- Identify the needs and requirements of companies when developing games and toys adapted to intellectual disabilities, in order to determine in which toy categories the need for universal design guidelines is most urgent.
- Analyze user requirements related to inclusivity in toys, to adapt the design of new toys to the needs and demands of users with and without functional diversity, with the main goal of promoting inclusive language.
- Create a universal design tool tailored to the toy sector. The review of existing universal design tools by an expert group will serve to conduct research on the accessibility of current toys for children with intellectual disabilities.
- Validate the research carried out to ensure suitability for companies, through the development of demonstrators in the form of pilot studies. The objective will be to create physical prototypes using the tool to assess their capacity and improve their functionality. The design briefing of the prototypes, concepts, 2D and 3D designs, and inclusive toy prototypes will be produced.
- Transfer the knowledge generated through: transfer workshops with companies, webinars, and a Good Practices Guide for the development of inclusive toys.
