Optimisation of design, material and manufacturing of customised and sustainable medical devices through additive manufacturing – ODISEA3D

The materials with cell proliferation and biodegradability potential developed by AIJU within the framework of the BioScaff3D project enable the search for new applications in the medical sector where such a need has been identified. If, in addition, as is the case with these materials, they can be customised using 3D printing or additive manufacturing technology, they could solve many of the problems currently associated with the use of certain medical devices and implants.

To this end, it is necessary to adapt the materials to the target applications, insofar as the devices must have an optimised design and the cytotoxicity of both the materials and the devices must be ensured for the intended purposes. However, how could this adaptation be carried out properly? And what requirements would these applications have to meet in order to be certified for subsequent marketing?

The ODISEA3D project, led by the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia (IBV) in collaboration with AIJU and AIDIME, aims to generate new knowledge on aspects of the development of “tailor-made” medical devices using 3D printing, through R&D activities in all phases of the project.

To this end, new methodologies for optimising the design of healthcare products will first be developed, enabling an optimisation flow to be defined that adapts the morphology of the product to the anatomy of each patient based on IBV’s experience. Through joint collaboration, ADIMME will develop new methodologies that allow biocompatible metallic materials to be adapted to the needs of each application, leading to the production of biocompatible metallic materials with controlled rigidity suitable for use in implants. Similarly, AIJU will develop new biocompatible polymer formulations applicable to customised products, allowing their use in the target customised products. All these metallic and polymeric developments will be applied to customised products with the optimisation developed by IBV.

The process will be endorsed by collaborating companies such as FRESDENTAL, ESPECIALIDADES MÉDICO ORTOPÉDICAS, S.L., TEQUIR, S.L., METALOGRÁFICA DE LEVANTE, S.A., PHARMADIS ELECTROMEDICAL, S.L. or COLORTEC QUÍMICA, S.L., which will establish the requirements for each application and validate the results by comparing them with other products already on the market made using other methodologies or materials.
