Decision support Tool for Risk Evaluation, management and awarenEsS of tree FailURE Disasters – TREESURE

Problem to be solved

TREESURE addresses a growing challenge in European cities: the increase in extreme weather events —such as storms and strong winds— that are causing trees to fall, with serious consequences for public safety, urban infrastructure, and the continuity of ecosystem services. Although urban and peri-urban forests are essential for mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing social well-being, their vulnerability to such events can turn them into a hazard if they are not properly managed.

Objectives

To address this issue, TREESURE will develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that will combine satellite data from the European Space Agency (ESA) with information gathered through IoT sensors installed in trees, together with nature-based solutions such as root-anchoring systems. This approach will enable the assessment and prevention of risks, improve local coordination in the face of natural disasters, and strengthen urban resilience to climate change.
