SMARTMED: Advancing Surgical Planning with AI and 3D Biomechanical Models

The SMARTMED project will develop an integrated clinical-technological workflow that combines artificial intelligence, 3D anatomical biomodels, customized implants, and mixed reality to improve surgical planning and intervention in orthopedic oncology. The initiative is being led by AIJU in collaboration with ITI, AIDIMME, and IBV, within the framework of the STEP Call of the Valencian Community, funded by the European Union through the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).

The Challenge: Transforming Medical Imaging into Actionable Solutions for More Accurate Clinical Decision-Making

Planning complex surgical procedures continues to face challenges related to medical image interpretation, limited availability of clinical data, and the need to integrate advanced digital tools into a single workflow. SMARTMED was created to address this need through a connected solution capable of transforming patient clinical data into practical tools that support surgical decision-making.

In addition, the project addresses current limitations associated with the automatic segmentation of medical images, 3D modeling, the generation of reliable anatomical models, and the integration of advanced technologies to support clinical professionals in highly complex procedures.

Main Objective: Advancing Toward Personalized Medicine Through Digital Technologies

The overall objective of SMARTMED is to develop and validate a coordinated clinical-technological workflow for personalized medicine aimed at improving surgical planning and intervention processes in orthopedic oncology. The solution integrates artificial intelligence applied to medical imaging, automated generation of 3D anatomical models, additive manufacturing of customized implants, and mixed reality environments for clinical support.

Specific Objectives

  1. Develop an AI-based pipeline for synthetic data generation, bias detection and mitigation, and automatic 3D medical image segmentation.
  2. Automate the conversion of medical images into hyper-realistic 3D anatomical models suitable for 3D printing and XR environments, developments carried out by AIJU.
  3. Design and manufacture customized implants optimized through AI-assisted tools.
  4. Develop a mixed reality environment with tracking capabilities to visualize and interact with relevant anatomical information during surgical planning.

Expected Impact: Toward a Collaborative Ecosystem for Digital Health Innovation

SMARTMED will contribute to more personalized, precise, and efficient surgery by facilitating the integration of clinical data, artificial intelligence, and advanced digital tools. The solution will foster the development of new capabilities in digital health and personalized medicine while strengthening Europe’s technological autonomy in strategic fields such as AI, advanced manufacturing, and immersive technologies applied to healthcare.

To achieve these goals, the project brings together the technological centers AIJU, IBV, ITI, and AIDIMME, which provide complementary expertise in artificial intelligence, anatomical modeling, additive manufacturing, and advanced interaction through mixed reality.

The project also involves companies and organizations from the healthcare and technology ecosystem, including DAWAKO MedTech, AVAMED SYNERGY, FRESMEDICAL, TEQUIR, BRONCES JORDÁ, FIHGUV, and ASCIRES, which will contribute to defining requirements, validating results, and assessing technological developments in relevant operational environments.
